The Weeknd isn’t dropping music just yet — but he’s letting fans hear enough to start asking questions.
During his April 26 show at Rio de Janeiro’s Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos, the singer debuted an unreleased collaboration with Anitta, giving the track its first full play in front of a live crowd. Hours later, he doubled down on the tease, posting a clip of the song on Instagram.
The preview came with striking animated visuals directed by Takashi Miike — a neon-soaked sequence of violence, romance, and chaos that appeared to mirror his onstage persona. Onstage, Tesfaye leaned into the moment, vibing to the track as it played out for the first time, before Anitta later joined him during the show.
The song, believed to be titled “Rio,” carries a heavy, pulsing bassline layered under softer R&B vocals — a sound that feels familiar but still slightly left of where fans expected him to go next.
It also marks their second collaboration. The pair previously teamed up on “São Paulo” in 2024, a track they also chose to preview live before its official rollout. Speaking about their creative process, The Weeknd previously said, “Anitta is a great friend. What she sent was so awesome that we created the song. We knew it was too special to just play on stage.”
That earlier release became part of the buildup to his 2025 album Hurry Up Tomorrow, which closed out a trilogy that began with After Hours and Dawn FM. The album went on to become his seventh No. 1 in Canada, continuing a run that has defined the latter half of his career.
But this new preview lands at a moment of transition. With no release date attached — and no confirmation on how it will be credited — fans are still unsure whether the track will arrive under “The Weeknd” or Abel Tesfaye. Last year, the artist revealed plans to retire the moniker after completing his current era, making every new release feel like it could be part of a final chapter.
For now, the music is staying on stage. But with The Weeknd set to return to São Paulo this week for back-to-back shows on what is already the highest-grossing tour ever by a male solo artist — crossing the $1 billion mark — the rollout is clearly already in motion.
He hasn’t said when the song is coming. But he’s made sure people are listening.
