Kid Cudi has removed M.I.A. from his tour after her opening set in Dallas sparked backlash online and inside the venue.

The moment happened during Cudi’s Rebel Ragers Tour stop on May 2, where M.I.A. was booed after making political and immigration-related comments onstage. According to reports, she told the crowd, “I’ve been canceled for many reasons. I never thought I would be canceled for being a brown Republican voter.”

Cudi confirmed her exit from the tour in an Instagram Story on May 4, saying he had already told his management to warn M.I.A.’s team that he did not want “anything offensive” at his shows. He said he had been “flooded with messages” from fans upset by her rants and added, “I wont have someone on my tour making offensive remarks that upsets my fanbase.”

Footage from the Dallas show also showed M.I.A. referencing her 2010 song “Illygirl.” She told the crowd, “We can’t perform Illegal, though some of you could be in the audience,” before adding that half of her team was not present because they had not received visas.

M.I.A. responded on X after Cudi’s post, saying the comments were tied to “Illygirl” and her past work around immigration. She wrote that she introduced the song by saying she was “illygal,” mentioned her team’s visa issues, and then performed lyrics criticizing unjust laws. She also pushed back on questions about whether she voted for Donald Trump, saying she cannot vote in the US.

The fallout adds another chapter to M.I.A.’s increasingly controversial public image. In recent years, the British-Sri Lankan artist has drawn criticism for comments about vaccines, 5G and surveillance. Earlier this year, she also appeared with Major Lazer at Coachella in a full-body outfit connected to her Ohmni clothing brand, which claims to offer “anti-surveillance” protection.

Cudi’s tour launched on April 28 in Phoenix and is set to hit more than 30 cities across North America. For now, M.I.A. is no longer part of the lineup, and Cudi appears to be making it clear that he does not want the conversation around the tour to move away from the music.
