Angela Simmons is looking back at her relationship with Yo Gotti without regret.
During a recent appearance on Cam Newton’s Funky Friday, around the 1 hour 39 min mark, Simmons was asked whether, after Yo Gotti famously rapped about having a crush on her in “Down in the DM,” she ever felt their romance should have stayed just that: a crush. Her answer was immediate. “No, not at all,” she said, before adding, “I had a great relationship.” When Newton asked what the relationship taught her, Simmons replied, “That I would be a great wife.”
The actress kept that same energy when the conversation turned to how things ended. Simmons said the breakup was less about bitterness and more about timing, explaining that when a long-term relationship ends, sometimes it comes down to the two people not being in the same place. “My relationship is great. When you are in a long-term relationship like I was, maybe it comes down to him, maybe just not being ready.”
She then makes it clear that there is still love and respect there. “We were locked in, like that is family to me. Love him, respect him, love his family down.”
That lines up with what Simmons said publicly last year when she confirmed the split. On Angie Martinez’s IRL podcast in June 2025, she revealed that she and Gotti had called it quits, saying the breakup was her decision, even though it was not what she would have chosen. At the time, she said, “It’s all love,” and made it clear there was still respect on both sides.
The relationship had always carried a full-circle quality. Yo Gotti first put his crush on Simmons on wax in 2015’s “Down in the DM,” where he name-dropped her directly. Years later, the two made their relationship public at the start of 2023, confirming what fans had long treated like a rap manifestation success story. By August 2023, Gotti was still publicly all in, calling Simmons “The One” in his music and starring alongside her in the video.

So while the romance may be over, Simmons is not framing it as a mistake. If anything, her latest comments make it sound like the relationship gave her clarity, not closure issues. And judging by the way she still speaks about Gotti with warmth, this looks less like a messy post-breakup rewrite and more like someone taking the lesson, keeping the love, and moving forward.
