Tristan Thompson has filed for a limited conservatorship over his 19-year-old brother Amari, according to court documents submitted on April 27.

The filing states that Amari lives with an intellectual disability and developmental delay, leaving him unable to manage daily personal needs, live independently, or handle financial matters.

The documents make it clear that Amari is not opposing the move. In fact, he “does not object” and has no intention of contesting the conservatorship — a detail that positions the filing as a continuation of an already existing caregiving dynamic rather than a dispute.

This isn’t the first time Thompson has taken legal steps to support his brother. In 2024, shortly after their mother Andrea passed away in 2023, Thompson was granted legal guardianship of Amari. At the time, he told the court that their father, Trevor Thompson, had been absent from Amari’s life for nearly a decade, leaving him as the closest active family member.

Amari’s condition requires constant care. He has epilepsy and other medical complications that necessitate around-the-clock supervision. Previous filings described him as unable to work or care for himself, while Thompson has shared publicly that his brother cannot walk or speak independently and relies entirely on assisted support.

That support, he says, hasn’t been a solo effort.

Speaking last year, Thompson described the importance of having a “village” — including full-time caregivers — to help manage the emotional and physical demands of Amari’s care. “Some days are tougher than others,” he said, crediting the people around him for helping navigate the responsibility after their mother’s passing.

That circle extends to Khloé Kardashian, Thompson’s ex and co-parent, who has also been closely involved in Amari’s daily life. On her podcast, Kardashian explained that Amari primarily stays in Los Angeles with her due to the instability of Thompson’s NBA travel schedule.

“He has a handful of seizures a day,” she said, noting that frequent flights would be unsafe. “We just want to provide Amari with the best, most beautiful life that we know how.”
