Award-winning director Spike Lee’s pregame dinner at Yankee Stadium reportedly turned tense Wednesday after a fan approached him and brought up Palestine.
Lee was dining as the New York Yankees hosted the Boston Red Sox when the exchange unfolded. Video circulating online shows the filmmaker becoming visibly agitated as several people moved toward the pair.
Sports radio host Andy Slater shared footage of the confrontation, reporting that the fan had been recording Lee while he ate.
People seated nearby told Slater that the fan raised the subject of Palestine. The brief video does not show how the interaction began or capture everything that was said before Lee’s reaction.
The New York Post later reported that the fan had approached Lee while seeking a selfie and allegedly asked him to repeat an offensive statement about Palestine.
No punches are visible in the footage, although the exchange appeared to draw the attention of people nearby. The fan was reportedly removed from Yankee Stadium afterward.
Neither Lee nor the Yankees has publicly provided a detailed account of what happened. Representatives for both reportedly did not respond to requests for comment from the New York Post.
The video quickly spread across social media, with sports accounts and users discussing the confrontation and Lee’s longstanding support for Palestinian civilians.
Lee has previously made his position on the issue visible at public events. During February’s NBA All-Star Game, he wore a sweater featuring a keffiyeh-inspired design and Palestinian flag imagery. Lee later said the clothing reflected his concern for Palestinian children and civilians and his belief in human dignity.
The Yankee Stadium footage, however, captures only a portion of the encounter. It shows Lee’s reaction but does not establish the full context of the exchange or independently confirm what was said immediately beforehand.
