More than six years after Pop Smoke’s death, his family is bringing his name back to the heart of Canarsie in a way that feels personal.
The late rapper’s loved ones are opening a new coffee shop called Pop’s Place in Brooklyn, with his older brother Obasi Jackson announcing the venture on Instagram last week. Alongside the reveal, the family also shared that they are currently looking for baristas to join the team, inviting locals to be part of what Jackson described as “something special.”
The announcement quickly sparked excitement from fans, many of whom flooded the comments with messages of support. Some praised the family for honoring Pop Smoke in a way that feels rooted in community, while others said they had already seen the shop and were impressed by how it looked.

Pop Smoke, born Bashar Barakah Jackson, was fatally shot during a home invasion in Los Angeles in February 2020, just as his career was reaching new heights. Even after his death, his influence has remained especially strong in Canarsie, where he is still seen as one of the neighborhood’s biggest cultural figures and where tributes to his legacy continue to draw support.

News of Pop’s Place also comes months after former NYPD chief John Chell claimed on The John Rondi Show that authorities had once been building a case around the rapper over alleged gang ties and a stolen car before his death.
With Pop’s Place on the way, Pop Smoke’s legacy is set to live on not just through his music, but through a new neighborhood space carrying his name forward.
