The official state autopsy of Nolan Wells has been completed as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the Mississippi teenager's death. While the autopsy has concluded, officials have not yet released the findings, and the investigation remains ongoing.

According to officials familiar with the case, the autopsy was performed by the Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office. The report will become part of the evidence presented to a grand jury once investigators complete their review.

Authorities confirmed that the autopsy has been finalized, but the results have not been made public. Investigators will include the autopsy report and all related case materials when presenting the case to a grand jury, which will determine whether any criminal conduct was involved.

Officials emphasized that presenting the case to a grand jury is a standard procedure for suspicious or unexplained deaths in Jackson County and does not indicate that a crime has occurred.

Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old college student, disappeared after joining friends on a Fourth of July boating trip to Horn Island, a barrier island located approximately 10 miles off Mississippi's Gulf Coast.

Authorities said Wells was last seen on the island before his disappearance. His body was recovered several days later, prompting an extensive investigation into the events leading up to his death.

A private autopsy commissioned by Wells' family previously concluded that both the cause and manner of death remain undetermined pending further investigation.

According to family attorney Ben Crump, the independent forensic pathologist noted several limitations that prevented a definitive conclusion, leaving key questions unanswered as investigators continue gathering evidence.

Detectives are also analyzing an emergency phone call made by one of Wells' friends to a local towing company on the day of the incident.

In the recording, the caller reported that their boat was sinking and requested assistance. The caller told the dispatcher that everyone on board was safe and that no one present was over the age of 21. Notably, the return trip described in the call reportedly did not include Wells.

Investigators are conducting their own forensic review of the audio to determine whether it contains additional information relevant to the case.

Ben Crump said his legal team has obtained the complete audio recording and plans to retain independent audio specialists to conduct their own analysis.

The family hopes expert examination of the recording may help clarify the sequence of events surrounding Wells' disappearance and death.

The Jackson County District Attorney's Office has stated that once the sheriff's department completes its investigation, the evidence—including the newly completed state autopsy report—will be submitted to a grand jury for review.
