J. Cole is stepping back into the Drake and Kendrick Lamar conversation, and this time, he is talking about everything that came after the music.
In a preview clip from his upcoming appearance on Cam’ron’s Talk With Flee podcast, Cole described how quickly the culture shifted once the feud escalated. “Right away, the world, it became like politics,” he said. “You’re either Democrat or Republican, you’re either Kendrick or you’re Drake, and you’ve got to pick a side.” He added that he was “the ni**a that was disgusted both ways, damn near.”
Cole made it clear he is not trying to judge the diss tracks themselves. “When you say did it get out of hand? Creatively, that’s not my place to say.”
What bothered him, he said, was everything surrounding it, specially the narrative concerning Drake. “It’s disgusting how people tried to use that opportunity to either show how they really felt about Drake the whole time or just pile on and tear this dude down and create a narrative as if he’s not great,” he said. “It was a whole campaign and probably still is ’til this day.”
At the same time, Cole acknowledged the other side of the moment, pointing to how much momentum Kendrick Lamar gained in the aftermath and his wife’s response to Kendrick’s apology.
Cole was briefly pulled into the feud himself after appearing on Drake’s “First Person Shooter,” responding with “7 Minute Drill,” and then walking it back publicly. Since then, he has largely stayed out of the back-and-forth, even as the battle reshaped the conversation around both Drake and Kendrick.
The full Talk With Flee episode drops March 24. J. Cole’s latest album, The Fall-Off, dropped earlier in February of this year.
