ESSENCE announced on Monday, June 22, that Missy Elliott will lead the special performance honoring her longtime friend and collaborator. The tribute is expected to be one of the biggest moments of this year’s festival, which takes place from July 3 through July 5 in New Orleans.
The celebration comes during an important anniversary year for Aaliyah’s legacy. August 2026 will mark 25 years since the R&B icon’s tragic death, while her groundbreaking sophomore album, One in a Million, celebrates its 30th anniversary.
Released in 1996, the album helped reshape contemporary R&B through its futuristic production and effortless blend of smooth vocals, hip-hop rhythms and electronic influences. Missy Elliott and Timbaland played major roles in creating the project, which featured classics including “One in a Million,” “If Your Girl Only Knew” and “4 Page Letter.”
ESSENCE Festival Plans Major Celebration of Aaliyah’s Legacy
Festival organizers said the tribute will celebrate Aaliyah’s music, artistry and influence across fashion, entertainment and Black culture. The full lineup of performers has not yet been announced, but more guests are expected to join Missy Elliott for the highly anticipated performance.
Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, expressed his appreciation for the upcoming celebration.
“Thirty-one years later, I am overcome with gratitude to the founders, artists, and the inimitable Missy Elliott for honoring my sister with this tribute, celebrating her life, art, and ongoing legacy,” Haughton said in a statement.
Missy Elliott and Aaliyah shared one of the most influential creative partnerships in R&B history. Their work helped introduce a bold and futuristic sound that continues to inspire artists nearly three decades later.
The tribute will offer longtime fans an opportunity to celebrate Aaliyah’s unforgettable catalog while introducing a new generation to the artist affectionately known as the Princess of R&B.
Aaliyah’s smooth vocals, signature style and forward-thinking artistic vision remain deeply embedded in modern music and fashion. The upcoming ESSENCE Festival tribute further proves that her cultural impact continues to grow.
The 2026 ESSENCE Festival of Culture will be held in New Orleans from July 3 through July 5.
