Samuel Monroe Jr., the actor known for appearing in several classic Black films of the 1990s, including “Menace II Society” and “The Players Club,” has died at 52.

Monroe’s mother, Joyce Patton, confirmed his death in an emotional Facebook post after months of public concern surrounding his declining health.

“I want to thank all of my Facebook family and friends new and old for praying for Samuel Monroe, Jr., my son,” Patton wrote. “But today God called him home.”

She also asked supporters to continue praying for Monroe’s family, particularly his three children.

Monroe had reportedly been hospitalized since April while dealing with a series of serious medical complications.

His family previously said the actor was battling meningitis and MRSA pneumonia and required dialysis to support his kidney function.

His condition reportedly became increasingly critical over the summer.

Monroe’s wife, Shawna Stewart, previously shared that he suffered more than 20 seizures around the end of July, resulting in swelling around his brain.

She said Monroe underwent three brain surgeries as doctors continued treating his condition. His family had repeatedly asked fans for prayers and support as his health worsened.

A GoFundMe was also launched earlier this year to help with Monroe’s mounting medical expenses and the possibility that he could require around-the-clock care.

Monroe became recognizable to a generation of moviegoers through appearances in several films that became staples of 1990s Black cinema.

His breakout film role came in the Hughes brothers’ 1993 crime drama “Menace II Society.”

The critically acclaimed film followed life in Watts, Los Angeles, and went on to become one of the defining urban dramas of the decade.

Monroe continued building his résumé with appearances in 1995’s horror anthology “Tales From the Hood” and the 1996 crime drama “Set It Off.”

He also appeared in the Wayans brothers’ comedy “Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood.”

Another of Monroe’s memorable performances came in Ice Cube’s directorial debut, “The Players Club.”

Monroe played Junior, the brother of Chrystale Wilson’s character Ronnie, in the cult classic.

The film, which also starred LisaRaye McCoy, Bernie Mac, Jamie Foxx and Ice Cube, went on to become another lasting piece of late-1990s Black cinema.

Across his career, Monroe developed a reputation as a familiar supporting presence in movies centered around Los Angeles culture and Black American life.

Decades after their original releases, several of those films remain cultural favorites.

News of Monroe’s death prompted tributes from fans who grew up watching his films.

His mother’s announcement followed months of updates from relatives as the actor fought through increasingly severe health complications.

Monroe is survived by his mother and three children. Multiple reports also identify Stewart as his wife.

For many fans, Monroe will be remembered through a run of films that helped define an era of Black cinema.

He was 52.
