Master P is speaking out following Mystikal’s 20-year prison sentence, reflecting on the former No Limit Records star’s legal troubles while raising concerns about mental health, substance abuse and accountability in the music industry.

During a recent appearance on the We in Miami podcast, the music mogul, whose real name is Percy Miller, discussed the circumstances surrounding Mystikal’s incarceration and why he believes the rapper never received the professional help he needed.

“I don’t think he ever got the right medicine he need,” Master P said, suggesting that untreated mental health struggles and self-medication can have devastating consequences.

“Drugs is killing our culture… they’re self-medicating,” he continued.

While Master P did not excuse Mystikal’s actions, he argued that the situation reflects a larger problem within the Black community and entertainment industry, where stigma surrounding mental health treatment can discourage people from seeking help.

Mystikal Sentenced to 20 Years After Guilty Plea

Mystikal, born Michael Tyler, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on June 16 following a criminal case stemming from a 2022 incident at his Prairieville, Louisiana, home.

The rapper had been accused of sexually assaulting and torturing a woman. He ultimately pleaded guilty to third-degree rape under an agreement that capped his sentence, avoiding the possibility of life imprisonment if convicted of first-degree rape.

During his sentencing, Mystikal reportedly addressed the victim, expressing remorse while acknowledging the consequences of his actions.

“If that’s what I did, I deserve every day of this sentence. I’m sorry. I hope you heal,” he said.

His legal team reportedly attempted to withdraw his guilty plea shortly before sentencing, but the 20-year prison term remained in place.

Master P Says Mystikal Helped Build the No Limit Empire

Despite the seriousness of Mystikal’s conviction, Master P made it clear that he has not forgotten the rapper’s contributions to No Limit Records.

“Man, Mystikal has helped us build an empire,” he said.

Mystikal joined No Limit Records in 1996 and became one of the label’s most recognizable artists during its late-1990s commercial peak. His albums Unpredictable and Ghetto Fabulous achieved multi-platinum success, helping establish the label as a dominant force in Southern hip-hop.

Master P also revealed plans to involve Mystikal’s son, Jimi Nu, in future tribute performances, allowing the rapper’s musical legacy to remain part of the No Limit story while he serves his sentence.

Still, the record executive acknowledged that musical accomplishments do not erase personal responsibility.

He said Mystikal is currently “where he need to be,” recognizing that the rapper must face the consequences of his actions.

For Master P, the situation carries two difficult realities: Mystikal played an undeniable role in building one of hip-hop’s most influential independent labels, but his achievements cannot undo the harm at the center of his conviction.
