The Love Island USA family is mourning a heartbreaking loss after executive producer James Barker died suddenly while the hit reality series was filming in Fiji.
Barker, who was 40, reportedly suffered an unexpected medical emergency last week during production on Season 8. ITV America and Peacock confirmed the news in a joint statement, describing his death as an unimaginable loss felt across the Love Island USA production team and the wider ITV and Peacock family.
The networks also announced that Barker will be honored during Tuesday night’s episode of Love Island USA.
“James’ unimaginable loss has been deeply felt across not just the entire Love Island USA production, but throughout all of ITV and Peacock,” the statement read. “He was a beloved and greatly valued member of our collective family whose kindness, talent and dedication left an indelible mark on all of us and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.”

The statement continued by extending condolences to Barker’s family, friends and colleagues.
Barker had been part of the Love Island USA team since 2020, first joining the franchise as a story producer before later becoming an executive producer. Over the last several seasons, he became a major behind-the-scenes force, helping shape the show’s story, post-production and music direction.
His work also extended beyond Love Island USA. Over more than a decade in television, Barker built a strong résumé across reality and unscripted programming. He began his career at Leftfield Pictures in 2011 and went on to work on shows including Pawn Stars, Counting Cars, Forged in Fire and Queer Eye. He was also involved in the wider Love Island franchise, including Love Island Games.
His passing comes just weeks after Love Island USA Season 8 premiered on June 2. The current season, hosted by Ariana Madix, is being filmed in Fiji and has already become a major talking point among viewers.
Just days before his death, Barker shared a heartfelt message about the show’s return and the team behind it.
“We come to Fiji for magic. We come to @loveislandusa to laugh, to cry, to care,” he wrote. “Our islanders feel like the best part of us, and stories feel perfect and powerful… because here… they are.”
He also praised the “huge squad of brilliant people” responsible for bringing the new season to life.
Following the news of his death, Barker’s post has been filled with tributes from colleagues, friends and fans remembering his warmth, creativity and impact on the series.
While Love Island USA is known for romance, drama and viral moments, Barker’s passing has reminded viewers of the large team of people working behind the scenes to bring the show to life.
