Lil Nas X is getting candid about his mental health, his recent time away from the spotlight, and what fans can expect from him next.
The Grammy-winning artist took to Instagram on Wednesday to open up about being diagnosed with bipolar disorder after what he described as a difficult period in his life. The update comes months after his August 2025 arrest in Los Angeles, which later led to a court-approved mental health treatment plan.
“When I got my bipolar disorder diagnosis, I feel like I had known for the past few years but I didn’t want to admit to it,” Lil Nas X said. He explained that part of his hesitation came from not wanting to take medication and worrying that people would view him differently.
In true Lil Nas X fashion, he also used humor while speaking honestly about the weight of the diagnosis.
“I’m already Black and gay, like damn, God. Come on, Black, gay and bipolar? I’m living life on extreme hard mode,” he said.
The rapper then made it clear that he is in a better place now.
“On a serious note, I’m doing much better, I’m feeling better,” he continued. “I’m creating freely and there’s less fear in my heart and I’m smelling the roses.”
Lil Nas X also revealed that he spent a few months in a rehab facility following the incident. Since then, he said he has been spending time between Atlanta with his family and Los Angeles with friends while trying to stay grounded.
“I have a therapist now and a psychiatrist, which has been really helpful,” he shared.
The update follows a legal situation that began after Lil Nas X was arrested on August 21, 2025, after being seen walking along Ventura Boulevard in Los Angeles wearing underwear and cowboy boots. He later pleaded not guilty to four felony charges. In April, a judge said the charges could be dismissed if he follows a treatment plan and obeys all laws for the next two years.
While the moment was heavily discussed online at the time, Lil Nas X’s new message focused less on controversy and more on recovery, accountability, and moving forward.
He also gave fans another reason to pay attention: new music is on the way.
“I’ve been doing music for seven years now,” he said. “Speaking of music, I want to let you guys know there’s new music on the way.”
Although he did not reveal a release date, Lil Nas X said he is excited for the next chapter. Smiling in the video, he thanked fans for staying with him through everything and said he wants to continue making them proud.
“We’ve been through so much together,” he said. “Thank you guys for holding it down, and love you. All I wanna do is continue to try to make you proud and make myself proud. Let’s go, Dreamboy.”
For Lil Nas X, the message appears to mark a turning point. After months of treatment and reflection, the rapper is speaking openly about his diagnosis while preparing to return to music with a clearer mind and a new sense of purpose.
