Lil Jon is opening up about what led to the end of his 18-year marriage to ex-wife Nicole Smith, revealing that years of disagreements and clashing personalities ultimately pushed him to seek a divorce.

During a November 4 appearance on the Angie Martinez IRL podcast, the Atlanta rapper and producer reflected on the breakdown of his relationship, admitting that he had grown exhausted by the tension at home.

“I decided I wanted a divorce because I was like, I’m tired of walking on eggshells,” Lil Jon told Martinez.

The crunk pioneer explained that while he considers himself an extreme optimist, he viewed his former wife as an extreme pessimist. According to Lil Jon, their opposing approaches to life made it increasingly difficult to find common ground.

Lil Jon Says Personality Differences Led to Constant Arguments

During the conversation, Lil Jon explained that he eventually realized the issues in his marriage went beyond occasional disagreements.

He believed their fundamentally different outlooks were responsible for repeated arguments, leaving him convinced that even marriage counseling would not change how they naturally approached situations.

The rapper said that realization ultimately made him want to move on and make a change in his personal life.

Lil Jon and Nicole married in 2004 after several years together. Their marriage lasted approximately 18 years, with the couple sharing a son, Nathan Smith.

Lil Jon Admits Touring May Have Kept His Marriage Together Longer

The “Get Low” rapper also made a surprising admission about how his demanding music career affected his relationship.

While discussing his memoir, I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me, Lil Jon suggested that spending so much time away from home performing and touring may have allowed the marriage to survive longer than it otherwise would have.

He explained that if he had worked a traditional nine-to-five job and returned home every evening, the relationship might have ended much earlier.

Looking back, Lil Jon also acknowledged that anger during the separation prevented him from fully considering Nicole’s perspective.

The experience eventually encouraged him to reconsider how he approached his own emotions and develop a more positive mindset.

Lil Jon Turns to Meditation and a New Chapter After Divorce

Since the end of his marriage, Lil Jon has embraced lifestyle changes that include meditation, mindfulness and a structured morning routine.

The Grammy-winning producer released his meditation album Total Meditation in 2024, marking a notable departure from the high-energy club anthems that made him a defining figure in Atlanta’s crunk movement.

He has also entered a new chapter in his personal life. In November 2024, Lil Jon welcomed a daughter, Nahara, with television personality Jamila Sozahdah.

The rapper has additionally been navigating the loss of his son, Nathan Smith, who performed under the name DJ Young Slade. Nathan died at 27 in February 2026 after an accidental drowning in Georgia.

Despite their divorce, Lil Jon and Nicole publicly expressed their shared heartbreak following their son’s death.
