Lil Durk’s federal murder-for-hire trial took another dramatic turn after the rapper’s former personal assistant testified about what he claims Durk said following the deadly 2022 shooting that allegedly targeted Quando Rondo.

Kavon Grant, who previously worked closely with Durk and has admitted his own involvement in the alleged plot, told jurors Tuesday that Durk reacted to news of the shooting by saying, “Finally, we got somebody.”

The testimony is a major part of the federal government’s case against Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks, as prosecutors attempt to convince jurors that he was directing an alleged retaliation campaign against Quando Rondo following the 2020 death of King Von.

Durk has denied involvement in the murder-for-hire plot.

Federal prosecutors allege Durk and members of his Only the Family, or OTF, circle wanted revenge against Quando Rondo over the circumstances surrounding King Von’s death.

Von was killed during a November 2020 confrontation outside an Atlanta nightclub after an altercation involving Rondo. Rondo’s associate Timothy Leeks was later charged in connection with the shooting, though the charge was eventually dropped.

During Tuesday’s testimony, Assistant U.S. Attorney Ian Yanniello questioned Grant about the alleged retaliation and statements prosecutors say Durk made through his music.

Prosecutors referenced one lyric in which Durk rapped about being unable to reach a primary target and instead going after someone close to that person.

Yanniello then asked Grant whether that was what happened in Los Angeles.

“Accidentally, yes,” Grant responded.

Grant’s answer referred to the August 2022 shooting in West Hollywood that prosecutors say was intended to kill Quando Rondo.

Rondo survived.

His cousin, 24-year-old Saviay’a Robinson, was killed.

According to prosecutors, three masked gunmen opened fire on Rondo’s vehicle at a Los Angeles-area gas station.

Grant testified that he remained in communication with Durk while members of the alleged group followed Rondo around Los Angeles in the days surrounding the attack.

At one point, Grant said he expressed concern about how disorganized the operation had become.

“We moving sloppy so far,” Grant recalled telling Durk. “It’s not really planned. It’s like a free-for-all.”

Grant testified that he later went to a rental property where Durk was staying in Encino following the shooting.

According to Grant, Durk asked him, “Do you think we got him?”

Grant said he did not know because he had not personally been at the scene when the shots were fired.

He later claimed that once Durk learned a person had died in the attack, the rapper responded, “Finally, we got somebody.”

The statements are allegations presented through Grant’s testimony and have been disputed by Durk’s defense.

Durk’s legal team has pushed an entirely different account of the shooting.

Attorneys for the Grammy-winning rapper argue that Grant was responsible for organizing the attack, not Durk.

That has made Grant’s credibility one of the most important issues in the trial.

Defense attorney Drew Findling attempted to undermine Grant’s testimony by playing recorded jailhouse conversations in which Grant discussed taking the witness stand.

In one conversation, Grant reportedly described testifying as his “time to perform.”

Findling also questioned whether Grant’s decision to cooperate with federal authorities was motivated by the possibility of receiving a lighter punishment.

“You were hoping for home confinement,” Findling told him.

“Same as your client,” Grant fired back.

Despite the defense’s questioning, Grant insisted that he was telling jurors the truth.

“I’ve been truthful,” he said.

Federal prosecutors have built their case around the theory that the 2022 attack was retaliation for King Von’s killing.

Grant testified Monday that Durk himself instructed the group to target Rondo, telling prosecutors when asked who ordered the alleged operation: “Durk told us to.”

Another cooperating witness, Keith Jones, who admitted being one of the shooters, also testified that he believed Durk was offering a large amount of money to have Rondo killed.

Durk’s lawyers dispute those allegations and have maintained that prosecutors are relying heavily on cooperating witnesses who have their own incentives to blame the rapper.

Durk, along with co-defendants David Lindsey and Deondre Wilson, is facing federal charges connected to the alleged murder-for-hire conspiracy and stalking operation.

The rapper has pleaded not guilty.

Grant’s testimony places one of Durk’s former closest associates directly against him in federal court, but jurors will ultimately have to decide whether they believe his account.

The defense is expected to continue challenging Grant’s motives, prior statements and cooperation with prosecutors as the government attempts to establish that Durk was overseeing the alleged plot.

Grant is expected to return to the witness stand Wednesday as the high-profile federal trial continues in Los Angeles.

A verdict could come as soon as next week.

Durk has maintained his innocence throughout the case.
