Kawhi Leonard is officially staying in Toronto, with the NBA star agreeing to a two-year contract extension worth a projected $115 million with the Toronto Raptors.

According to The Athletic, the deal includes a player option for the 2028-29 NBA season. The contract is reportedly around $11 million below the maximum amount Leonard could have received.

The extension comes after Leonard returned to the Raptors in a blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Raptors made a major move to bring Leonard back, sending forward Brandon Ingram, guard Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, a pick swap and two second-round picks to the Clippers.

Leonard had been playing under the final year of a three-year, $149.5 million contract he originally signed with Los Angeles in January 2024.

The new agreement keeps the two-time NBA champion in Toronto beyond the upcoming season and gives the Raptors one of the league’s most accomplished two-way players for at least the next two years, assuming he remains with the team through the player-option decision.

Leonard enters his return to Toronto with a decorated NBA résumé.

The forward has won two NBA championships and two NBA Finals MVP awards, capturing his first title with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014 before leading the Toronto Raptors to their first championship in 2019.

Leonard has also won two NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards and has been selected to seven All-Star teams. His other accolades include seven All-NBA selections, seven All-Defensive Team selections, a 2020 NBA All-Star Game MVP award and an NBA steals title in 2015.

In 2021, Leonard was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.

The contract agreement had reportedly been reached earlier in the summer but was temporarily delayed while the NBA investigated allegations of salary-cap circumvention involving the Clippers.

The league ultimately cleared the transaction after imposing sanctions on Los Angeles and fining Leonard.
