Jhené Aiko is finally giving fans the album they’ve been waiting years for.
The R&B singer announced that her highly anticipated new project, “Westside Whimsy,” will be released on Friday, September 11, marking her first studio album in more than six years.
Aiko revealed the news on social media alongside the album’s cover art, which features a close-up of the singer against a teal background with crystal-like tears decorating her face.
The project will be released through Def Jam Recordings.
Jhené Aiko Returns Six Years After ‘Chilombo’
“Westside Whimsy” will serve as the official follow-up to Aiko’s 2020 album “Chilombo.”
The long gap between projects hasn’t gone unnoticed by the singer herself.
Aiko admitted that the past six years brought major changes and challenges that repeatedly delayed her ability to finish the album.
“You guys so much has happened in the last 6 years,” she told fans while announcing the project.
She added that every time she tried to fully focus on the album, life seemed to interrupt the process.
Aiko said she is now both excited and nervous to finally release the finished project, while thanking fans for sticking with her through the wait.
What Inspired ‘Westside Whimsy’?
Fans actually received their first hint at the album’s title months before its official announcement.
Earlier this year, Aiko partnered with Erewhon Market for a limited-edition smoothie called “Westside Whimsy.”
She later offered more clues about the project’s direction during a wellness retreat in California.
Aiko explained that the album draws heavily from the culture and atmosphere of her home state, particularly the sounds and aesthetics associated with the 1990s.
“All the music of the ’90s has really influenced me,” Aiko explained.
She specifically pointed to West Coast car culture, surfing, beaches and California’s laid-back lifestyle as major sources of inspiration.
Long drives through California and the state’s “magical” atmosphere also helped shape the sound and feeling of the project.

The announcement quickly received support from both fans and fellow artists.
Kehlani, H.E.R., Ella Mai and Chlöe Bailey were among the artists who celebrated Aiko’s return in the comments.
The reaction reflects just how anticipated the follow-up to “Chilombo” has become.
Over the years, Aiko has built a dedicated fanbase around her atmospheric production, introspective songwriting and emotionally vulnerable approach to R&B.
Now, listeners will finally get to hear what she has been creating during one of the longest album breaks of her career.
