Jay-Z and J. Cole are stepping up for Lil Durk, submitting personal letters to a federal judge in support of the rapper’s latest attempt to secure his freedom while awaiting trial.
The letters, filed on October 27, were addressed to U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald ahead of Durk’s November 4 bond hearing. The Chicago rapper remains in federal custody despite being acquitted of murder-for-hire charges in September.
In his letter, Jay-Z described Durk as a disciplined and respectful artist who used his success to create opportunities for younger musicians. The Roc Nation founder praised Durk for signing aspiring artists from disadvantaged communities and helping them establish legitimate careers.
J. Cole also defended Durk’s character, recalling their collaboration on the Grammy-winning 2023 single “All My Life.” Cole highlighted Durk’s determination to deliver a positive message through the song and his commitment to personal growth.
Meanwhile, Durk’s attorneys, Brian Steel and Drew Findling, have proposed an extraordinary bond package that would put the rapper’s financial future at risk.
The proposal includes his future music royalties, publishing rights, touring income, and rights to his name, image, and likeness. Sony Music Entertainment has also offered to guarantee a bond of up to $1 million.
Durk, whose real name is Durk Banks, was acquitted on September 11 of charges stemming from a deadly 2022 Los Angeles shooting allegedly targeting rapper Quando Rondo. However, he continues to face separate racketeering-related and firearms charges, which he denies.
Federal prosecutors oppose his release, arguing that he remains a flight risk.
With his next trial scheduled for August 30, 2027, the November 4 hearing could determine whether Durk can return home while his remaining legal battle continues.
