Ice-T is taking fans back to the early days of his friendship with Jay-Z while clearing up a long-running conversation surrounding one of Hov’s biggest records.

The hip-hop veteran recently shared a photo with Jay-Z from the Grammys and revealed that their connection dates back to before the Brooklyn rapper became a global superstar.

According to Ice-T, Big Daddy Kane was responsible for their introduction.

Ice-T shared the story while reflecting on his longtime relationship with Jay-Z on social media.

“I met Jay Z way back,” he wrote, explaining that Big Daddy Kane once brought the future Roc-A-Fella star to his home in Los Angeles.

Ice-T added that he and Jay-Z have “always been cool.”

The story highlights Big Daddy Kane’s role in Jay-Z’s early career. Before releasing his debut album and establishing himself as one of hip-hop’s biggest names, Jay-Z performed and toured alongside Kane.

Years later, his connection with Ice-T would become part of another major piece of hip-hop history.

Ice-T also used his post to address Jay-Z’s 2003 hit “99 Problems,” which shares its title and central phrase with Ice-T’s earlier song.

Ice-T released his version of “99 Problems” in 1993 on his album Home Invasion. The track featured Brother Marquis of 2 Live Crew and approached the concept from a very different perspective than Jay-Z’s later record.

A decade later, Jay-Z and producer Rick Rubin reworked the idea for The Black Album.

Jay-Z’s version dealt with subjects including police encounters, racial profiling and the pressures surrounding his life and career.

Despite years of discussion about the connection between the two songs, Ice-T made it clear that he never viewed the situation as a feud.

“And YES, he remade ‘99 Problems,’ but there was never any Beef or bad Business,” Ice-T wrote.

This isn’t the first time Ice-T has addressed speculation surrounding “99 Problems.”

The rapper previously recalled crossing paths with Jay-Z at the 2023 Grammys after online discussions suggested he might have been upset about Hov using the concept.

According to Ice-T, Jay-Z approached him about the chatter.

Ice-T maintained that there was never serious tension between them, although he has previously acknowledged that a shout-out or recognition of the original record would have been appreciated.

His latest post once again makes his position clear: the history behind “99 Problems” never damaged their relationship.

Ice-T’s post quickly sparked reactions from hip-hop fans who appreciated hearing more about the connection between three influential figures from different eras of the genre.
