Drake had more than national pride riding on Canada’s latest World Cup victory.
The Toronto superstar reportedly placed a $770,000 wager on Canada to defeat South Africa in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. After Canada secured a dramatic 1-0 victory, Drake’s winning ticket returned $1,001,000—giving him an estimated profit of $231,000.
Before the match, Drake posted a screenshot of the massive Stake bet on Instagram and revealed that a private exchange with South African DJ Black Coffee helped inspire the gamble.
“@realblackcoffee was chirping in the DM. I had to raise my stakes,” Drake wrote.
While Black Coffee may have been confident in Bafana Bafana, Drake ultimately walked away with both bragging rights and a six-figure profit.
The knockout match remained scoreless for most of the night, with neither side able to produce a breakthrough at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Canadian midfielder Stephen Eustáquio finally delivered the decisive moment in the 92nd minute, firing home a late winner that sent Canada into the Round of 16.
The victory marked Canada’s first appearance in the men’s World Cup Round of 16 and added another major milestone to the co-host nation’s historic tournament run. Canada will now continue its campaign with a place in the quarterfinals on the line.
South Africa’s loss ended an encouraging campaign under head coach Hugo Broos. Bafana Bafana advanced beyond the group stage and reached the knockout rounds before being eliminated by Eustáquio’s last-minute strike.
For Drake, the payout is the latest chapter in his highly publicized sports betting history.
Since partnering with Stake in 2021, the Grammy-winning rapper has regularly shared enormous wagers covering the NFL, NBA, UFC, Formula One and international soccer. His bets have become so closely followed that fans frequently reference the so-called “Drake curse” whenever one of his chosen teams suffers a disappointing loss.
The Canadian hitmaker has experienced plenty of costly defeats. During the 2022 World Cup final, Drake reportedly bet on Argentina to defeat France within regulation time. Argentina eventually won the championship on penalties, but Kylian Mbappé’s late equalizer forced extra time and caused Drake’s wager to lose.
This time, there was no last-minute heartbreak for the rapper.
Eustáquio’s stoppage-time goal sealed Canada’s historic advancement and turned Drake’s $770,000 gamble into a million-dollar payout. Although he did not earn a full $1 million in profit, the successful ticket still added approximately $231,000 to his famously deep pockets.
