Madison Square Garden erupted in loud boos when President Donald Trump appeared on the arena’s video screens during Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.
Trump was shown standing for the national anthem inside a suite alongside Knicks owner James Dolan. As the reaction spread through the sold-out arena, the president saluted before smiling at the noise coming from the crowd.
The moment quickly became one of the biggest talking points from the Knicks-Spurs NBA Finals matchup, with footage of Trump being booed at Madison Square Garden spreading across social media.
Trump attended the game with his granddaughter Kai Trump and several government officials. His appearance made history, as he became the first sitting United States president to attend an NBA Finals game.
Former President Barack Obama attended Game 2 of the 2019 NBA Finals in Toronto, but he was no longer in office at the time. Obama received a much different response, with fans chanting “MVP” as he sat beside NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
Trump’s NBA Finals Appearance Brings Heightened Security to MSG
Donald Trump’s visit brought major security changes to Madison Square Garden and the surrounding areas of Manhattan.
Fans were encouraged to arrive at least two hours before tip-off, while Secret Service checkpoints and additional screening measures led to long lines outside the arena. A strict no-bag policy was also implemented for the Knicks-Spurs game, and some spectators reportedly waited more than an hour to enter MSG.
The security arrangements affected players and team staff as well.
San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox openly criticised the disruption during the team’s morning shootaround.
“I think the president being here just makes it inconvenient on everybody else,” Fox told reporters.
Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson said he had not personally experienced any major inconvenience, but acknowledged the unusual atmosphere surrounding Game 3.
“There’s a lot going on, and I’d much rather be a part of it than not,” Johnson said.
Knicks head coach Mike Brown avoided discussing Trump’s attendance and kept his attention on the NBA Finals.
“I’m just locked in, man, on Game 3,” Brown said. “For me, my focus is just what’s next and what’s in front of me.”
Brown also revealed that the heightened security changed his routine. Rather than travelling from his home in Westchester County, he stayed at the Knicks’ team hotel in Manhattan ahead of the game.
Spurs End Knicks’ 13-Game Winning Streak in Front of Trump
The night did not end the way Knicks fans hoped.
The San Antonio Spurs defeated the New York Knicks 115-111, ending New York’s 13-game postseason winning streak and cutting the Knicks’ NBA Finals lead to 2-1.
Trump had initially planned to attend Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals. However, the Knicks swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in four games, eliminating the need for another matchup in that series.
His eventual appearance came during a historic postseason for New York. The Knicks are competing in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999, when they also faced the Spurs and lost the championship series.
New York has not won an NBA title since 1973, making the team’s return to the Finals one of the city’s biggest sports moments in decades.
