The murder case against D4vd is facing another delay as attorneys continue reviewing a massive amount of evidence collected by prosecutors.
During a June 17 status conference in Los Angeles, a judge postponed the singer’s preliminary hearing from June 29 to July 21. The multi-day proceeding will determine whether prosecutors have presented enough evidence for D4vd, whose legal name is David Anthony Burke, to stand trial.
It marks the third postponement of the hearing, which was originally scheduled to begin on May 1 before being moved to May 26 and later June 29. Another status conference has been set for July 7, while the preliminary hearing is expected to last approximately five days.
The latest delay was granted after D4vd’s defense requested additional time. Prosecutors have reportedly turned over more than 10 terabytes of digital material, with the complete discovery in the D4vd murder case potentially exceeding 40 terabytes.
What Charges Does D4vd Face?
D4vd faces a first-degree murder charge with special-circumstance allegations in connection with the death of Celeste Rivas Hernandez. He has also been charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14 and unlawful mutilation of human remains.
The 21-year-old singer pleaded not guilty to all charges in April. His attorneys have maintained his innocence and said they intend to vigorously defend him.
D4vd remains in custody without bail.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office alleges that D4vd killed Celeste after she threatened to expose an alleged sexual relationship that began while she was underage. Prosecutors claim the possible motive involved protecting his growing music career.
The murder charge includes special-circumstance allegations involving lying in wait, financial gain and killing a witness in a criminal investigation. Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will seek the death penalty.
What Happened to Celeste Rivas Hernandez?
Celeste’s remains were discovered on September 8, 2025, inside the front storage compartment of a Tesla registered to D4vd. The vehicle had been impounded after it was reported abandoned near a Hollywood Hills property where the singer had been staying.
Celeste was 14 years old at the time of her death. The Los Angeles County medical examiner later listed her cause of death as multiple penetrating injuries.
Prosecutors allege that D4vd killed Celeste at his Hollywood Hills residence and later attempted to conceal her death. Court filings are expected to form a major part of the evidence presented during the upcoming preliminary hearing.
D4vd was arrested on April 16 following a months-long investigation and formally charged four days later.
Before the criminal case, the singer rose to prominence through TikTok and streaming platforms with songs including “Here With Me” and “Romantic Homicide.” His debut album and viral success had positioned him as one of indie pop’s fastest-rising young artists before the investigation brought his career to a halt.
The July 21 preliminary hearing will not decide whether D4vd is guilty. Instead, the judge will review the prosecution’s evidence and determine whether there is probable cause to move the case toward a full trial.
