Beyoncé celebrated her birthday by giving back in a major way.
The superstar donated $2 million to the Studio Museum in Harlem in honor of her 45th birthday, putting her support behind one of the country’s most influential institutions dedicated to artists of African descent.
The contribution was announced on September 4, Beyoncé’s birthday, and comes less than a year after the museum opened its new $300 million building on 125th Street.

Beyoncé explained that the museum has played an important role in introducing her to emerging Black artists.
“Art tells all our stories; the past and the present, but is not always accessible to everyone,” she said.
The singer added that she has long admired the Studio Museum and its commitment to Harlem.
According to Beyoncé, exhibitions at the museum have introduced her to several young Black artists who later became some of her favorites.
She described the institution as a place where people can discover new perspectives, artists and stories.
Donation Comes After Museum’s Major Harlem Expansion
The Studio Museum in Harlem recently entered a new chapter of its own.
The institution opened an expanded $300 million facility on 125th Street, giving it significantly more room for exhibitions, artist development programs and its acclaimed artist-in-residence initiative.
Founded in 1968, the museum has spent decades supporting and showcasing artists of African descent while helping reshape representation within the art world.
Its artist-in-residence program has also played a major role in developing generations of Black artists.
Studio Museum Director Thanks Beyoncé for Birthday Gift
Thelma Golden, the museum’s director and chief curator, publicly thanked Beyoncé for the contribution.
Golden said she was especially grateful that Beyoncé chose to make the donation on her own birthday.
She also said the gift recognizes the larger role the Studio Museum plays in the lives of artists, visitors and the surrounding community.
“Our institution was founded to shift the arts landscape and reimagine who that landscape serves,” Golden said.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z Have Long Invested in Art
Beyoncé’s support for the Studio Museum also reflects her longtime interest in contemporary art.
She and her husband, Jay-Z, are known collectors whose art holdings have reportedly included pieces by major names such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and George Condo.
Visual art has also repeatedly appeared throughout Beyoncé’s music, performances, films and fashion.
Her latest contribution now directs some of that influence toward an institution focused on making Black art more visible and accessible.
