Ayesha Curry is setting the record straight on one of the most talked-about narratives from her relationship with Stephen Curry.

During an appearance on the IMO podcast with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, Ayesha revisited her old remark about not wanting to date athletes and admitted it was “very disrespectful” and “very rude.”

Ayesha explained that the quote came from a much younger version of herself and did not reflect how she actually felt about Steph. “I was 14 years old,” she said, clarifying that she was not even allowed to talk to boys at the time. She also pushed back on the long-standing idea that Steph was never her type, saying she always found him attractive.

She went on to reveal that her hesitation had more to do with insecurity than disinterest. Rather than thinking he fell short of her standards, Ayesha admitted she did not believe she was his type. She described Steph as “Mr. Cool” and said she assumed he only saw her as a friend.

Sitting beside her, Steph appeared to take the moment in stride, laughing as she acknowledged how unfair the comment sounded in hindsight.

The moment adds a little more clarity to a relationship that has long played out in the public eye. Ayesha and Steph first met as teenagers through church in North Carolina, years before either of them became the public figures they are now.

They later reconnected as adults, married in 2011, and have since built a highly visible partnership spanning basketball, business, parenting, and entertainment.

Over the years, the Currys have often been presented as one of celebrity culture’s more stable couples, though that has not stopped old clips, comments, and relationship discourse from resurfacing online. Ayesha’s latest explanation seems aimed at closing the loop on one of those recurring talking points by giving it the context it always lacked.
